When Electronic Arts acquired Codemasters, all of the developer’s previous projects moved over to the new publisher’s umbrella as well, with Onrush being one of the active multiplayer titles. The game’s player base has slowly plummeted over time, however, and it has only taken a few more years for EA to decide that keeping Onrush’s multiplayer servers live was more trouble than it was worth.

According to EA, Onrush no longer has enough players to warrant keeping its servers up and running, and none of its multiplayer functionality will be available after November 30, 2022. With two years having gone by since EA acquired racing game developer Codemasters, Onrush seems to have been given time to try and find its niche, only to fail in doing so as time went on. While it is a shame that this is happening, it’s worth pointing out that all of Onrush’s offline functionality will remain available, allowing players to enjoy the game’s single-player content.

One of the potential reasons behind Onrush not having a player base in 2022 is that it only launched on a limited number of platforms. The game is available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, and it never came to any of the other popular platforms. In fact, Onrush was inaccessible on Xbox for a while when a security exploit was discovered, forcing Codemasters to remove it from sale until the issue was resolved.

Since its acquisition, Codemasters has moved on to developing Need for Speed in conjunction with Criterion, and the rumor mill surrounding the next franchise entry is already working overtime, with leaks suggesting a bold new entry for the series. The loss of Onrush’s online functionality doesn’t seem to be a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, then, and the lessons Codemasters learned while working on it are bound to be applied to its newer projects.

Gamers interested in seeing what Codemasters has been working on as of late should tune into the new Need for Speed game reveal that’s slated for October 6. The franchise is bound to make a bombastic return to form following a three-year hiatus after the release of NFS: Heat, and if the leaks are anything to go by, it’s going to make for an interesting change of pace.

Onrush is available on PS4 and Xbox One consoles.
