Although Destiny received mostly positive reviews, thanks to its addictive (if not repetitive) leveling and loot hunting systems adn super-polished gameplay, it’s no secret that the game’s generic sci-fi story didn’t do much players. The cinematic cut-scenes were aesthetically-pleasing enough, but the real driving force in the game was always getting to the next level, not learning the mysteries of the universe. The first cinematic trailer for the upcoming The Dark Below DLC may help turn things around on that front…
Many of the trailers that were released at Destiny’s launch were fairly lighthearted and focused on the fun of gunning down aliens, rather than the threat to the survival of the human race. The team at Bungie seems to be going with a different strategy this time around and the The Dark Below opening cinematic offers no laughs at all.
The cinematic was leaked online thanks to YouTuber Mr Jester6598 who had the following to say about finding the footage buried in some game files…
Comparisons to Blizzard’s usual cinematics for World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo seem inevitable. The style and tone of the trailer both match Blizzard’s typical high-budget, serious tone (Mists of Pandaria aside…). Let’s be clear, this isn’t a bad thing at all. The Dark Below offers a great hook that gets viewers interested in the content’s major villain, the setting, and the threat being presented to our playable characters. It’s hard to say if the content will actually capitalize on the possible new investment in the game’s lore, but it certainly has our attention for the time being.
The Dark Below releases on December 9th and raises the game’s level cap from 30 to 32. The two DLC packs that we know about - this being the first - expand on the game’s narrative and multiplayer experience by adding three multiplayer maps, a new raid, and five new bounty slots to fill up with new gear. Players who purchase the season pass also earn some other rewards.
