RELATED: Beginner Tips For Orcs Must Die! 3
The Orcs Must Die! is an indie game series that was able to mix two seemingly different genres (Tower Defense and Third-Person Shooter) into one epic and action-packed adventure. And with Robot Entertainment’s latest game, Orcs Must Die! 3, players must again protect The Rift from the hordes of evil. One enemy type that poses the biggest threat to the players are the ones that fly, as they can easily sneak past them and enter The Rift. Fortunately, there are numerous ways players can defeat these annoying little creatures, but careful planning is necessary if a player wants to get a perfect score.
Flyers Breakdown
In Orcs Must Die! 3, there are seven Flyers (flying type enemies), each bringing a different threat to the playing field. For starters, each one has a unique elemental type of damage: Toxic (Bilebat), Fire (Hellbat/Hellbaby), Void (Voidbat), Frost (Frostbat), and Shock (Shockbat). As players can expect, they are all immune to their specific elemental type and can ignore Barricades (the best Trap in Orcs Must Die! 3).
On top of that, the Flyers Boss (Chromatica) can adapt to any elemental type, making it extremely difficult to defeat without the proper setup. Every Flyer has a Headshot multiplier of 7.5 and is weak against physical type traps. The ideal weapons to deal with these enemies are ranged, which Orcs Must Die! 3 has plenty of.
Best Traps To Use
Since the Orcs Must Die! series is a Tower Defense game at its core, players can expect that some traps are specifically designed to defeat Flyers. But, of course, fans should place these traps in areas that’ll hit both Flyers and Grounded enemies since there tend to be more Grounded enemies than Flyers. Here’s a list of the best Traps to use against them:
Rapid Fire Ballista
The Rapid Fire Ballista is a manual trap that players can use to mow down multiple Flyers and Grounded enemies. This trap deals 80 Damage per Ballista and can pierce through multiple enemies. Once upgraded, the Rapid Fire Ballista will cause Bleed (8 DPS for 3-seconds) and has a slight chance of stunning enemies for 3-seconds. The biggest issue with this trap is its slow reload speed, so enemies like Hellbaby or Kobold Runner can overrun the player.
Guardian Archer
A reoccurring trap in the Orcs Must Die! series, the Guardian Archer, continues to be one of the best defenses against flying-type enemies. The Guardian Archer has a trigger range of 16 squares and can shoot Flyers no matter how high they are as long as they are within the 16 squares. Players can upgrade the Guardian Archer, so it has a higher health pool and deals Fire Damage to enemies. And unlike previous OMD! titles, the Guardian Archer will not disappear once its health gets to 0, but rather it’ll go into a Knockdown state until it recovers its health.

Auto Ballista
Players that aren’t too good at manually firing the Rapid Fire Ballista will enjoy using the Auto Ballista since it automatically shoots enemies within a 16-square radius (can be upgraded with 5 Skulls). The main issue with this trap is that it targets the first enemy that enters its trigger range, meaning that if a Grounded enemy enters first, it’ll ignore any Flyer. So, players should place the Auto Ballista in an area that won’t have too many Grounded enemies.
Snow Cannon
Another go-to trap players should use against Flyers is the Snow Cannon. It shoots Frost-based ammo that inflicts the Freeze status effect, causing them to crash onto the floor. But, of course, this trap is ineffective against the Frostbat, but players can remedy this by upgrading it so that it can cause Acid damage.
Best Weapons To Use
While traps can help deal with Flyers, players must use the correct weapon to avoid being overrun by them. Fortunately, Orcs Must Die! 3 has several ranged weapons that can easily take down hordes of Flyers. Here are a couple of the top picks to use against them:
Crossbow
Arguably the best-ranged weapon in the entire Orcs Must Die! series, the Crossbow is the ideal weapon to use against Flyers. The main benefit of using the Crossbow is that it has one of the highest Headshot multipliers in Orcs Must Die! 3, which Flyers are extremely weak to. On top of that, its secondary skill can stun a large group of enemies, making them easy targets for traps like the Auto Ballista or Guardian Archer.

Magic Longbow
Even though players mostly favor the Crossbow to defeat Flyers, the Magic Longbow is a decent runner-up since it has the fastest reload animation in the game. And while its primary attack lacks substantial damage, its secondary skill makes up for it as it’s a Multi-shot attack (fires eight arrows at a time). Moreover, once maxed out, every arrow will cause Bleed for 3-seconds.
Chain Lightning Staff
Players that enjoy using heroes with high Mana pools will want to use the Chain Lightning Staff as their go-to ranged weapon since it can easily wipe hordes of Flyers (up to 5) with a single lightning chain. And the best part of using the Chain Lightning Staff is that there’s a slight chance that the lightning chain resets, thus chaining onto other enemies, whether flying or grounded. But, this staff is mana-hungry, so players should use its attack cautiously, as running out of mana will render this weapon useless (similar to The Glintstone Staff from Elden Ring).
Orcs Must Die! 3 is available now for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4/5, Microsoft Windows, and Google Stadia.
